The research stage for this project started by speaking with a range of people who used the current portal and asked them questions about how it could be improved and what they would like to see changed.
From this I created site maps, user stories and empathy maps, which are shown below.

After speaking with the engineers, managers and admins who would be/are using the portal I then created user stories for different scenarios.

Goals, Needs and Outcomes:
Ability to add photos to job notes
Photo upload option
Provides proof of job, speeds up customer complaints if job quality is questioned.
(p) As an engineer who takes photos before and after every job and uploads them onto a different portal…
(A) I want a portal where I can add both my job notes and photos…
(N) So that I can provide further proof of the job quality and be able to refer back if needed.
Goals, Needs and Outcomes:
Show engineer availability
Based on skillset/postcode availability
Communication between engineer and management becomes easier. Stops the engineer being put in for a job he can’t do, limiting customer complaints.
(p) As an engineer who can only repair appliances and work in specific areas on certain days of the week…
(A) I want to put my availability on the portal with my postcode availability and skill set visible
(N) So that I can only be sent jobs I can attend that fit with my schedule.

Before the design process began I designed a site map showing the new and updated features. This allowed me to narrow down which features needed prioritising and required the most work. From this, I chose to work on the calendar feature first as it was the largest feature and was in need of an update.

The images below reveal the final calendar design which shows the daily, weekly and Monthly layouts.
Scrolling down the page reveals the engineers jobs for that day, which when tapped would open a further job description providing all the information they needed with regards to their job.
This rest of the portal is still currently being designed.
